Ethidium bromide (EtBr) waste

Liquids containing EtBr must be treated with activated charcoal and then disposed of down the drain.

If you use TBE (Tris-Borate-EDTA Buffer, borate is a CMR):

• treat it with activated charcoal to eliminate the EtBr,
• recover the borate buffer (without charcoal) in a can,
• dispose as chemical waste, indicating Borate on the can.

If you have deposited a can of EtBr waste, please recover it and treat it appropriately.
