ionising_radiations
The IGBMC is authorised to hold and handle radioactive elements and X-ray generators for research purposes. This authorization has been granted for 5 years in 2020.
- Any operator trained in the use of radioelements or X-rays must strictly observe the safety instructions relating to this handling. He/she protects him/herself and others from exposure and prevents the contamination of people and equipment. He/she also manages the radioactive waste produced.
- The authorized radioactive elements are tritium (3H), carbon 14 (14C), sulphur 35 (35S), phosphorus elements 32 (32P) and 33 (33P) and iodine 125 (125I). No other radioelements are allowed.
- The handling of labelled molecules must be done in rooms clearly identified by the grey “radioactive clover” on a white background affixed at the entrance to each authorised room.
- Several X-ray machines are also used in the Institute for small animal imaging, crystallography, or irradiation.
- All procedures for the use of ionizing radiation are monitored by the institute's Radiation Safety Officers (RSO).
By law, all staff of the institute must be officially informed of the presence of radioactive sources and X-ray generators in the establishment.
